Dear Bates,

We’ve had a particularly exciting week.  Thank you to all who were able to join us for Bates in Bloom on Wednesday.  We all enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate our students’ work with family members.

Thank you also for the many thoughtful ways you’ve recognized Bates educators this week for Teacher Appreciation Week.  Our generous PTO spoiled us daily with treats, an amazing lunch on Wednesday and more.  Please know that we are touched by all of your messages of thanks and appreciation!

Thursday and Friday we hosted an educational visit by the Bionic Project.  Ask your child to share what they learned about inclusive behavior and language, access for individuals with physical disabilities and universal design.  After a whole school assembly, each class engaged more deeply on these topics with the Bionic Project educators and elite athletes.  Younger students read and discussed the picture book What Happened to You? by James Catchpole, focusing on how to make a connection with someone with a physical disability.  Third, fourth and fifth graders learned how to play adaptive soccer.  You can learn more about the Bionic Project and read about team members Dana and Nico who visited Bates and .  For all of us interested in learning more about adaptive sports and athletes, Nico encouraged us to watch the Paralympic Games on tv this summer.  Thank you to our PTO for supporting this incredible educational experience for our community.

Have a great weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to all of our moms!

Warmly,

Toni

Dear Bates,

I hope you enjoyed the vacation week.  I returned rejuvenated and very excited to see our students back at school this week.  As we enter the final months of school, there is much to celebrate.  We hope you’ll join us on Wednesday, May 8 at 8:30 am for Bates in Bloom.  This is an opportunity for all families to visit their child’s classroom to admire our students’ hard work and highlight their learning this year.  If you are not able to join us on May 8, please let your child’s teacher know.  We can arrange another time for you to drop in with your child.

The last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 13.  Please note that Wednesday, June 12 will be a full day of school for students, and Thursday, June 13 will be an early release day ending at 12:00.  Fifth grade families, please save the date for our Fond Farewell ceremony on Wednesday, June 12 at 9:00 am.  I’ve included a number of other important dates below.

I want to thank our families for your efforts to arrive on time for school.  Our community really thrives when all students arrive in time to settle in and get prepared for their day.  As a reminder, please plan to arrive by 8:25 in order for school to start by 8:30 am.

Warm regards,

Toni
